Wrinkle-relaxing treatments

What are wrinkle-relaxing treatments?

Botulinum toxin is a chemical produced by bacterium clostridium botulinum. Wrinkle-relaxing treatments use a protein derivative of the toxin, which, when injected into a muscle, causes it to become weakened or inactivated. There are many different brands of anti-wrinkle injection, such as cosmetic injections, Azzalure, Dysport. At Laser Aesthetica we use cosmetic injections because we believe it has the best results in terms of unwanted migration from the site of injection.

How does it work?

By using facial muscles repeatedly throughout a lifetime, the skin is creased in areas of greatest use. The ageing process causes the slow down of collagen and elastin production in the skin so that as we get older, these areas of over-use become damaged and the lines become permanent. By reducing the movement of muscles in these areas, the skin stops being creased and is allowed to recover, causing the lines to soften or even fade away. In the areas treated, the muscles are temporarily inactivated (always reversible), during which time the you can break the subconscious habit of overusing these muscles.

For the first couple of years, frequent treatments are required to ‘re-educate’ the facial muscles. Thereafter, treatments would be less frequent until a yearly maintenance treatment is normally all that is required.

How safe are wrinkle-relaxing treatments?

In high concentrations botulinum toxin is a potent poison. However, botulinum toxin used minute doses, as it in in cosmetic therapy, has a very high margin of safety.

What happens during treatment?

The procedure takes about 15 minutes. An extremely fine, short needle is used to inject the cosmetic injection into the appropriate area. This may cause some slight but brief discomfort. The area may have some slight redness and swelling, which normally resolves in an hour or two. The treatment normally starts to take effect after 4-14 day, but this may very slightly with some individuals. The effects will normally last between 2 and 6 months, when you will start to notice an ability to move the muscles more freely.

Are there are side effects?

Side effects of this treatment are rare. Most people find that the injection causes only mild discomfort. Immediately after the injection there may be mild swelling, which usually subsides in 48 hours. occasionally a temporary dropping of the eyelid can occur. This may last a few weeks, but will always resolve. Special eye drops can be prescribed during this time to help lift the lid back into position. In extremely rare cases patients have developed an allergy to the treatment, while others have shown resistance, i.e. it causes little or no effect on the treated muscle.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to bring a more youthful appearance by restoring volume or fullness to the face and lips. They work by reducing or eliminating lines, wrinkles and folds in the skin and the effect is seen immediately after treatment.

As the skin ages we lose collagen, fat and other natural moisturising substances from our skin. Our skin becomes thinner and we start to see lines, wrinkles and folds developing. Youthful definition is gradually lost as volume levels are depleted.

Dermal fillers can be used to restore facial volume including cheeks, cheekbone, and chin. Fillers can be used for filling medium to deep lines around the nose and mouth, as well as for enhancement of the lips.

What type of facial fillers are used?

We use hyaluronic acid fillers from the Juvederm range by Allergan; a natural ingredient that is found in the body, but diminishes with age. The are an excellent means of adding volume to the facial structure, creating a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Is is safe?

Side effects with Juvederm are rare, but may include redness, tenderness, or pain at the injection site. If these occur, they usually subside within three days. Rarely, discolouration may occur, but this is reversible. Firmness, swelling, bumps and bruises are also rare side effects, which should subset within seven days.

Common areas treated:

  • Cheeks: Ageing usually contributes to volume loss. The round, full look diminishes as the fat pads in our cheeks gravitate downwards.
  • Lips: Thin lips are not necessarily a result of ageing. We add natural-looking volume and definition to enhance your natural lip shape.
  • Marionette lines: Located just below the corners of the mouth, the marionette lines can make you sad and aged.
  • Nasolabial fold: These are the lines which run down the sides of the nose to the corner of the mouth. These are normally seen when we are smiling or laughing, but over time they can develop into static lines and folds.

The 8-point facelift:

This is an innovative anti ageing technique which uses the most advanced non-surgical techniques to lift and rejuvenate the face, creating a much more youthful appearance. The benefits to this approach is that there is no downtime associated with this treatment the results are natural-looking and subtle, with immediate effect.

(They) said, 'have this one treatment and you be the judge of the improvement.' And I have to say, it's pretty dramatic! I'll definitely be going back again.
